After 1948 Matisse was prevented from painting by ill health but, although confined to bed, he produced a number of works known as gouaches découpées. These were made by cutting or tearing shapes from paper which had been painted with gouache. The shapes were placed and pasted down by an assistant working under Matisse's instruction. Some of the later ones, such as L'Escargot (French for The Snail), were of very large dimensions, ±2.80m x 2.80m. 'I first of all drew the snail from nature, holding it. I became aware of an unrolling, I found an image in my mind purified of the shell, then I took the scissors,' Matisse said. He has combined pairs of complementary colours - red/green, orange/blue, yellow/purple - to create a particularly vibrant effect. He gave the picture the alternative title La Composition Chromatique [Chromatic Composition].

I create colorful and highly detailed works of art to express my love for the modern human as well as my concerns about contemporary society. My hyperreal paintings are based on photographs I took during long walks through my hometown and major cities. Paintings show people on the streets, in stores, public transport and museums or zoom in on popular products. To me these glimpses of everyday live are important as they say a whole lot about todays society. They show the way people act, communicate or are influenced by modern developments in various ways. I observe it, enlarge it and paint it. That way I freeze time and our fast and busy lives are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly. About me: I'm an international recognized artist for over 20 years well known for his own style of realism painting. My art is in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide (6 continents, 30 countries). In 2018 I showed his works alongside Warhol, Haring, Banksy and others at a group show at his art dealer in France. I live and work in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.
