About The Artwork

This piece was started while on the last art residency in Havana. I was painting the cathedral- one which over the last 10 years has been a favourite to paint but working from photos in Europe. Enjoying seeing the crumbling beauty of Havana and all the details that made up this cathedral a Cuban artist joined me sketching too and told me about life there and the cathedral, we swapped pens. The piece morphed into a textured papercut, which I could print the base of this piece on and use as inspiration for this large scale series on my return. I became involved in an experimental art workshop just next to the cathedral and in the midst of cigar smoke, guitar song and everyone rushing out to see the 'gooaaalllll' echoing around the streets of televisions blaring out the World Cup and faces crowded around we created art, and discussed the political situation and life as an artist from our different perspectives. Please note these pieces are framed with a simple slate coloured dark framed around them and ready to hang.

Emmie is a mixed media artist whose inspiration comes from journeys, mystical tales and the bizarre sights she has encountered. These may be the crumbling beauty of Cuban buildings, the sensory kaleidoscope of India or the time echoing features of Istanbul. Her work often examines the transitory nature of architecture from its planning and construction to its ruins and its structure revealed. It has been said that a building is ‘a volume of human history, holding within its pages the stories and secrets of generations past and present’. The world the artist creates is one in which buildings both within and without are permeated with the disparate details of the lives of their former inhabitants. Emmie works with a number of galleries and is represented in London and Internationally by Quantum Gallery in the last year she has shown in New York, Miami, Hong Kong and Singapore. She takes on a variety of commissions and teaching opportunities. For more information please visit: www.emmievb.com
