About The Artwork

This piece from my "Circles of Time" series represents my latest explorations into contemporary abstraction. Each painting from this group is executed on a round shaped canvas (tondo). The background consists of an airbrushed "color field" sharply contrasted by a polychromed linear or circular element in the foreground, which is packed with dense, gesturally applied color, indicative of my signature brushwork. It may appear that the polychromed "element" is floating in the foreground, but this is an optical illusion. My work as a pioneer of "Abstract Illusionism" has been well documented since the late 1970's, when I also began working exclusively on shaped-canvas structures. The unique shapes of my paintings allow them to visually function in a wide range of physical environments.

Jack Reilly is long-standing contemporary American artist known for his abstract and mixed genre paintings on shaped canvas structures. His artistic career began in Los Angeles during the late 1970s when he was discovered by legendary L. A. gallerist, Molly Barnes. He is also recognized as an original member of the Abstract Illusionism movement, and as one of the foremost artists working in shaped canvas today. His work is exhibited in galleries and museums internationally and included in numerous public and private collections. Major public art commissions include a forty-foot painting, executed in enamel on steel, for San Diego County, and an eighteen foot shaped-canvas painting commissioned by American Airlines. He is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant.
