About The Artwork

Colour and expression are very important in my art. The earliest period of my work in the 1980s or 1990s were clearly based on inspirations, the work of post-impressionists, expressionists and fauvists. These my earlier works display bold painting techniques and issues connected with the relativism of colour. I have been interested in examining colour from an early age. In the 1980s, when I was a teenager, those fascinations resulted from my admiration for Fauvism, especially Matisse’s works of art. I liked paintings created by post-impressionists and expressionists, “(...) the absurd, painterly world of “Maurice de Vlaminck or Andre Derain, where the grass is red and the mountains are purple”.I admired the intensity, fleshiness and juiciness of oil paint in Van Gogh's paintings. I valued futurists for movement and momentum, Gauguin for the tropical, hot colours of Tahiti, and Toulouse – Lautrec - for the softness of the line of painted characters. During my early work, intense colour, expression and colour relativism played an important role. It was then that I developed the highest colour sensitivity, studied it analytically like in a laboratory, contacting one with another to feel double sounds and chords like in music. In the 1990s, I created oil paintings in an advanced way, which became increasingly abstract over time. I was watching the relationship between colours and light. I also paid a lot of attention to the way in which old masters - e.g. Vermeer or Caravaggio - created painting compositions. Coming back to Matisse, his colours seem to be singing, and I have been fascinated with their musicality and vividness which are close to my heart even today.
