Lamentation for Afghanistan. Painting

To Herat Goodbye indicates a lamentation for what Afghanistan has endured during the last 40+ years. I travelled from Mazar I Sharif in the north to Herat in the east in 1977 with a Cotton caravan consisting of a half dozen old Bedford trucks through the river valleys. Although poor, it was a proud and in many parts prosperous country. As we got nearer to Herat there was a primitive road sign that said Goodbye to where we came from and To Herat indicating our direction. in the title, it refers to a country that at present says Goodbye to itself and seemingly the world also turns its back on them.
