This work, as with all my nail pieces, tends to defy categorization. It is probably best referred to as an assemblage as it is certainly not a painting. The only paint used is black enamel with which I have coated each nail sealing it into the fabric which is heavy cotton. For me originality is still a very critical element in great art and there is a crucial need for creative originality in man's contemporary endeavors if we are to solve the worlds pressing problems and secure a viable future for humanity on the planet. Therefore art can inspire the worlds leadership and people to so strive by displaying this quality to a high degree. This is one of the ideas informing my invention of these nail works and I looked for inspiration at my ancestral cultural heritage namely African creative practices such as the Nkisi nail figures from the Congo. The work also references the Haitian Revolution. Archaie is the place in Haiti where the African generals announced their independence and the end of slavery in their country.
