About The Artwork
Expressive work centred on the idea of a gyre or vortex, a patterned movement with the potential to spin out of control. This series is a response to extreme anxiety in the face of uncontrollable forces and the process of centring and calming oneself. In series they move from the chaotic to more calm. They are made with carbon blacks and ochres, materials that have been used by humanity since the beginning of mark making as an art form and still used to this day. They are informed with by the channelling of chi energy in traditional Chinese ink painting which I was fortunate enough to study under Ding Laoshi in Jiangxi China in the 1990s, and the use of gestural expression by the abstract expressionists. They are a cultural blending of East and West.
