The night the Chilean protests of 2019 began I saw buildings and buses burning in the news. I was living in China at the moment and had dreams about my home city burning. I was suddenly there, escaping from the chaos and sawing fires rising up to the sky. The dream was vivid. Soon after, the protests were happening everywhere in Latin America and other world cities including Bogotá, my home city. I want to represent a feeling of unrest we share in Colombia. To take this to the canvas I worked over the images from that night the chilean protests began. That year, I found we share this feeling which is like being inside a bus which is burning. This unrest is portrayed by this scene. Is a cruel metaphor for Latin America. It’s a bus with no direction, we are inside while it burns. The painting comes from a photograph were the protesters burned private property. I painted the figures inside the bus and wrote over the shied the word Dolor, which in spanish means pain.

Wilmer Kopernikus makes figurative oil paintings, drawings and collages. His art practice shows a deep interest for eroticism, most of his work is an exploration on sexuality. Latin-America subjects and landscapes are also part of his interests as well as exploring collage where Wilmer experiments with a large range of styles. His exploration of the medium of painting began with a pop art approach by simplifying forms and using pure colors but then moved to a classic and more realistic technique. The last series of paintings named oral fixations, explore a much more expressionistic approach. His works begin always from a photograph; then he uses appropriation, manipulation, modification or an interpretation by painting. For him representation and figurative painting is something that humanity has always loved to do, for that reason it will never die, the thrill of making an illusion with color pigments is too appealing to be completely removed. it is a cathartic experience.
