To me, these cairn paintings serve as metaphors for what I understand is a spiritual transformation, also known as ascension, that humanity is now undergoing at the individual and collective levels. My erosive method of painting, which I call sculptural flow, symbolizes the process of psychological shadow work and healing necessary for this shift in consciousness. Like cairns out on the trail they represent the beings who serve as wayshowers for those on the path of spiritual awakening. Cairns also reflect my love of the American southwest, as these iconic rock stacks are found throughout trail systems there. I often use a line of paints made from gemstones and minerals for this subject. There's a spiraling, self-referential theme to my cairns: paintings of stones using an erosive technique that reproduces the process that creates stones, using paint made from the stones depicted. Why all the white space in my paintings? I intuited it had something to do with breathing, symbolizing either the inhale or the exhale. Now I think this white space represents that pause between the exhale and the inhale. My paintings encourage you to breathe, and savor that moment of rest. The paint in this particular painting is made from garnet gemstone. The paper used is Arches 140 lb cold press block. It has a rough texture and slightly off-white natural color. Please note that there are traces of black adhesive around the paper's edges from where the sheet was attached to the block of paper. This edge can be covered in the framing process. Painting is unframed.

I am a self-taught watercolor artist. Spiritual evolution has emerged as the core theme of my paintings since I recently returned to art after abandoning it 20+ years ago, not surprisingly as I'm undergoing a spiritual awakening in my personal life. I tend to portray my subjects transforming in some way to serve as visual metaphors for this theme. Integral here is my method of painting I call sculptural flow, which involves a deep respect for the unique character of the medium. I recognize paint and water as co-creators instead of as mere tools. When given freedom to express itself without much control by the artist, watercolor produces unpredictable and often uncanny effects that invite interpretation; the medium becomes the message. Embracing watercolor's unique expression serves as an exercise in surrender for the painter. As I've learned, some surrender of our constant, socially-programmed need for control to the subtle co-creative forces that permeate our reality is an important part of humanity's evolution--a byproduct of which (I can happily report) is a radically more magical and peaceful life. Thus spiritual awareness infuses not only the subjects I paint, but also the way I paint, which I consider a personally transformative practice that extends beyond making art.
