About The Artwork

I had primed this canvas and begun to put down the foundation for a seascape of the West Bay of Lake Michigan in view from our dock. The initial division of land and water had been made and I'd started to comprise the tidepools at low tide. Then a friend invited me and some others on their beloved 45' 1985 Jefferson, a wooden boat that looks as beautiful as the day she left the shop. We headed over to Lee Point, a shallowish, grassy water expanse with just enough draft to keep us afloat. We could see all the tiny peninsulas jetting out from the larger Leelanau Peninsula, but also the wildlife that had come to feast on a cool evening of glassy waters. It surprised us all when a Bald Eagle swept down only a few yards from the boat to catch herself a lake trout so heavy that the otherwise majestic flying death machine (to fish, anyhow) kept losing altitude and brushing the water with her new catch, trying to make it to the marsh to land and eat. Along came three seagulls (we actually call them bagels here as is bay- gulls) too lazy to fish themselves, surrounding that eagle, trying to make him drop that sizable catch. If only I had a net! When the eagle finally made it to the marsh, he ate quickly, while shooing away the gulls with his wings. It was a really intense and exciting time being ringside to nature in such a lovely vessel. When I got home, I reworked the foundation of my painting and determined that it would be Lee Point from the vantage point of the Sand Dollar, that lovely boat. I am really happy with the brightness, fresh and light approach to a view that evening as the sun went down. I've never seen pink sunsets like here in Northern Michigan, and this piece is just a little slice of what it looks like--from a boat.

I’m a self-taught artist and paint-slinger. I work in acrylic, watercolor, ink, and oil on paper and canvas. In 2020, my primary studio moved to Traverse City, Michigan. We simply needed to slow down and focus on living more deliberately. As a blessed wife and mom to four wonderful kiddos, I never lack for inspiration. My work continues to morph and evolve and I rarely stay in one original style for too long. An occupational hazard for certain— But, life is too short to get stuck and stay there.
