About The Artwork

This is part of a recent series of work where my work is moving towards a more illustrative style inspired by Medieval illuminated manuscripts and also by Persian Miniatures. The work is purposefully whimsical with the aim of bringing joy into the viewer's life and a momentary escape into another world in order to escape the travails of this real world. My love of nature is evident in all my work with animals - both real and imagined and plants in evidence. This quirky painting blends together imagined elements as a form of painted collage with a narrative emerging bit by bit as the painting progresses towards being completed. My process is to lay down an abstract ground layer of colour and build a world upon those shapes and tones. I hope this charming painting enchants you : )

I was born in London and was raised and lived in Ireland until moving to Berlin, Germany in 2007. After 6 years in Berlin, I returned to Ireland in 2013. I completed a joint degree in Fine Art Painting and Art History at the National College of Art and Design in Thomas Street, Dublin and graduated with honours in 1995. My work has been exhibited in Ireland the UK and Germany among others and features in private collections in Germany and Ireland. The broad theme for my work is 'Fairytales for adults' - I like to depict the unseen thoughts, stories, imaginings, dreams and emotions that go on inside our heads - mine in specific. For the last few years I had been drawing and later sculpting small figures which bordered between lifelike and doll-like as subjects for my art - both painting and sculpture. However, since returning to Ireland from Berlin I have graduated onto using real people and environments as painting subjects rather than a self-constructed world.
