Hurricane Sandy flooded New York 2012. My studio was then, and still is, in LIC. It's an area of Queens by the waters edge where ocean stream connect NY harbour with Long Island Sound and is called the East River (don't ask why). At that October of 2012, flooding in LIC submerged cars and Costal Guard had to navigate streets for days in rubber boats. The same area was later rapidly built, transformed and gentrified from industrial warehouses to towering skyscrapers competing to reach passing clouds. Hipster condos replaced art studios, and corner bodegas turned into artisan coffee bars and hip breweries. Climate change scare in recent years with forecasted rise of ocean level got me thinking if developers heard about floods or they might've gotten different memo than the rest of us. On happier note, floods have been welcomed at times in the past, as in ancient Egypt where flooding of Nile river would fertilize land to bring plentiful harvest. Metaphorically, a flood of good ideas can transform one's life of society, if put to good use. I still reside in LIC, Queens, by some miracle and purchase of this work can help that lofty cause. Work is mixed media on gessoed honeycomb cardboard panel 1/2" thick. Edges are framed and protected by permanently attached strip of plywood. Painted with acrylics and spray-cans. Orange, white and blue, you can find in the painting are colors of the flag of NY state and NYC, respectively.
