The work is inspired by current world events; in the context of our journey into this world - from innocence, to a place of darkness, then (with hope), our breakthrough, finding our true self and moving forward through the gaps in the darkness.

The meandering spine, seen to be curving through the centre of the piece, represents our fundamental being. It appears tactile and scaled, a throwback to our oldest reptilian brain, responsible for our basic functions of heart rate, breathing, body temperature and balance.

The veils on either side of the spine, resemble the messages, both subliminal and conscious, which attempt to dominate and own our innocence. This in turn desensitises us from our true being and masks our true self. The experiences we have, shape us and force us to blend within the constructs of our surroundings.

As the darkness flows around us, it sets out to draw us into its prison - represented by the cage-like structure. The darkness hold us in bondage, stifling and absorbing our inner light.

However, the light of humanity shines on. It gathers the intellect of life's messages, lessons and cruelties. The truth eventually forms a congruence and reaches the coveted point of self actualisation. We no longer feel the pull to conform, but are convicted to stand up and bring our light back into the world.
