Lioness I was painted in a series of works in my 'Wild' series. One of many magnificent and beautiful wild animals under threat of extinction due to loss of habitat, poaching and hunting. I worked from photographs I took myself whilst living and working in South Africa. I was particularly captivated by the steely gaze with which this very powerful Lioness held her prey in her sights. She was working closely with another female - seen here almost as a ghost figure in the background with the second tail swishing cautiously so as not to alert her prey. I want to convey the power and movement to the viewer, as well as the magnificence and beauty of this amazing creature. I work with layers and pools of inks and acrylics, building form where muscle, fat and bone lie with colour, pigment, tone and texture. The image is celebratory and the use of "diamond dust" adds a ceremonial sparkle to the image which is pop-artish as well as rich to look at. It literally glints like that Lioness's eyes in a strong light. There are passages in the painting which read like landscape and the little tree which sends roots down into the Lioness's spine, is a symbol of vibrant life and hope. It's a painting which tells a thousand stories and I love that this narrative keeps emerging and is different for every viewer.

United Kingdom
Born in Surrey, UK but spent most of my life living & working in London and in Johannesburg, South Africa. My most recent artworks celebrate the magnificence and majesty of some of Africa’s most iconic wild animals, facing threat from diminishing habitats, hunting and poaching. There is also a light shone on the delicate balance and the dance of equilibrium which our natural and manmade worlds continually engage. I make expressionistic and contemporary mixed media paintings, drawings and prints which build up lakes and layers of translucent and luminous colour and texture. Calligraphic, graphitti-like marks create structure and form but also express emotion, motion and energy. I am much influenced by the traditional ink works of nature from the far East.
