About The Artwork

"Christiaan Sijtsma’s still lifes exude an overall traditional ambiance, yet maintain a distinct character of their own. He always starts from his own observation. He paints objects as he actually sees them, not from a photograph. This approach gives his paintings a convincing sense of depth. In this relative small still life Christiaan Sijtsma depicts a small bird, which has passed away. With much attention to detail and his fine brushwork, Sijtsma managed to capture the essence of this bird. One might find this painting to be quite sad. However, because of the lighting together with the striking metallic-coloured picture frame Sijtsma chose, sadness is not necessarily at the forefront. What is, is a certain admiration for nature. which has brought forth this bird." Executed in oil paint on ‘Lionboard Oil Tempered’ (commonly know as Masonite), I finished this work with two coats of gloss varnish. It is presented in an old frame I bought some time ago at a vintage shop. The silver/gold metallic look of this frame makes it a great fit for the ambiance I want this painting to have. Please note: this frame is old, weathered and - as can be seen in the pictures - damaged at certain points. Personally, I find this specific frame along with all its imperfections, to match the nature of this painting. However, not everyone might share this opinion, therefore this frame is not calculated into the price and thus comes free with the painting. The dimensions of the work itself are 18 x 26 x 0,6 centimeter, while including the frame, it measures approximately 24,5 x 33 x 2,5 centimeters. The framed work will be carefully packed with acid-free paper, poly wrap, bubble wrap, corner protectors and styrofoam boards. The wrapped work will then be secured in a sturdy cardboard box.

Christiaan Sijtsma was born in Heerenveen, the Netherlands, in 1995. After completing high school, he pursued a degree in Dutch law at the University of Groningen, specializing in private law. He graduated in 2021. From a young age, he was interested in design and color. During his study of law in early 2017, he developed an interest in painting. This quickly grew into a true passion, and he focused on painting with oil paint. Christiaan Sijtsma is self-taught, having built up his technical knowledge and skills on his own. Christiaan Sijtsma primarily paints still lifes. He always starts from his own observation. He paints objects as he actually sees them, not from a photograph. This approach gives his paintings a convincing sense of depth. His sense of atmosphere is expressed in his color palette, the objects, and the carefully constructed compositions. The still lifes exude a traditional atmosphere, but they maintain a distinct character of their own. In addition to painting still lifes, Christiaan Sijtsma also paints marine/maritime subjects. His paintings depict the forces of nature - the wild water, the wind - and the ships that defy these forces.
