ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Inspired by sketches and photographs of the coast and then improvised in the studio. It has a contemplative feel. Partly inspired by the work of Diebenkorn and 1950s British "St Ives" artists. There are a variety of marks visible: some use of palette knife, some staining, some scumbling. Some areas are impasto, some just wash. Unframed, but hanging fixtures can be attached if requested.

I paint the pictures that I would like to see: merged abstract and figurative modes with a story or a definite image and an identity. I like to create spaces in which something abstract can happen. My pictures are truly abstract in that they often start out a lot more detailed and figurative than they wind up. Landscapes, objects and figures get colors, forms and details abstracted from until I get an enigmatic image that I can live with.
