At the start of lockdown it all became very complicated very quickly. Easy for me to self isolate but the knock on effects soon became all too clear. How would I look after my very aged mother/walk the dog/do my shopping....and hers, get the car fixed, the washing machine replaced or call an ambulance. Obviously I did all of those things whilst making room for my adult son to return home from a "no housing" situation in London. I lost several rooms in my house to someone who now had to work from home and frankly the best place for me was to hide in the studio. So I went "large" again, ( having said I would work smaller in future). I could order paint online so I spent a fortune on the best acrylics and drew out what was happening in the garden. It was the end of March. The birds carried on as usual, they just got louder. There were no cars drowning out their endless chatter. It was eerie. I decided I liked it. I only got the car out once a week instead of everyday. I decided I liked that as well. I imagined the Covid virus rolling like tumbleweed along the streets amongst the flora and fauna and along the main road by my house and that the thrush and blackbirds were letting me know it was passing.

My work is concerned with the layering of translucent colour and form built up over time to create ethereal and symbolic imagery. I use paint, gold leaf, digital media and thread to achieve this. My original degree was in education but after 25 years of teaching I returned to the University of the West of England to complete a Masters in Multi Disciplinary Printmaking, gaining a Distinction. My work took a total change in direction, from abstraction to figurative work which embraced the concept of "divine feminine" combining the intricacies of pattern with Gothic aesthetics. I have recently retired from a 36 year teaching career and plan to paint, potter and plot constantly. Like most women artists I have created a studio at home. I live by the sea in South West England. www.rachelcawley.com
