About The Artwork

I painted this work in April 2020 during the UK coronavirus lockdown. This painting, perhaps more than most in this series in response to the pandemic, reflects the impact of lockdown on our mental health. The spider’s web of branches suggests our entrapment with the gaps between the branches depicting the view from our own limited cages. The upward spiral of the web dizzies us with frightening daily statistics. Is there light at the end of its narrowing vortex? Paradoxically the web is keeping us safe for now, but we know that we can’t stay in it for ever as under the darkness we will succumb. And for many of us, our cages represent a living hell. But how do we get out? No one really knows. More will be revealed to us. Until then, the blue bells offer us hope, their colour reminding us of our heroes and the now familiar NHS barrage balloons are the life rafts to a new normal land.
