About The Artwork

Although my love of flora and fauna is focused mainly on painting avian subjects I like to do a few insects and plants occasionally. This beetle is, I believe, a type of longhorn (referring to its antena) though it has stag-like mandibles and is one of a few longhorns that I have painted. My preferred style in my watercolours is a semi-realistic style, that I call loose-tight, usually against a plain white background. I like to capture some detail but prefer a degree of looseness that I feel appeals to bird-lovers, ornithologists or those keen to decorate their homes with colourful bird pictures. While many of my paintings are in A4 paper size I usually to paint on larger supports eg A3 or 34 cm x 40 cm, or imperial when I can get it. My watercolour paintings, made with top quality pigments, are sold unframed. My recommendation for framing is to have a 5cm matt, non-reflecting glass, and a simple black wooden frame. Owing to the covid-19 pandemic there may be a delay in delivery of artworks but I aim to ensure delivery time is minimised. While stocks last I am including a pocket book on collecting Fine Art Photographic Prints with each sale.

Birds. And Nature. These are the subjects that inspire me. At an early age I loved exploring hedgerows and streams. Teeming with diverse life, they fascinated me. My appreciation of flora and fauna broadened, through travel, to include birds, plants, animals and insects, though birds were always special. I am a British artist and photographer based in Brazil. My nomadic life began in Libya, where I was born, and has taken me to live in 15 countries on 5 continents, visiting 40 or more other countries in my lifetime. Places as diverse as deserts, rainforests and the concrete jungles of city life have been home to me. I remain a keen traveller focusing on commercial Travel / Food photography and writing in addition to painting.  While most of my paintings are in watercolour I also paint in other media. I would describe my style as loose/tight as I like to balance a degree of looseness against the detail found in the key elements of a bird's genus. My aim is to make them recognisable while retaining an element of artistic impressionism.
