About The Artwork
The title comes from a desktop folder of paintings that never progressed and were painted over or destroyed in the process of reworking.. The identical beach houses that I first saw on the Isle of Wight had worked their way into a few previous starts. The tiny figures in this painting (some are circus performers) seem to be pausing for all those lost paintings that had to come before it to make the final acceptable one. The texture that results is only possible from the process, that of reworking, and refinement, over time. The act of painting, then , becomes a metaphor for how one might live, and "lost paintings" are all attempts, all possiblities.
