About The Artwork

The painting is signed on the back & comes with a signed and dated certificate of authenticity. This painting is part of Arietta's ongoing series “Finding Closeness”, through which she is interested in capturing the intangible idea of human intimacy. Understanding intimacy as a word loaded with unique meaning for each individual, Arietta’s definition of the word is a broad one, focusing mostly on this feeling of comfort and deep-rooted warmth that radiate off of intimate moments. The focus of the paintings in this series is to recreate fleeting moments of closeness suspended in time, whilst simultaneously seeking to explore the often destructive relationship between humanity and the natural world through layered backgrounds. As the backgrounds are overcome by scenes of closeness we are reminded of the more positive aspects of humanity. Yet, some texture remains in the paint, some words can still be deciphered; the scars of the world are ever present, they must not be forgotten, but they must also not distract from the human ability to come together, to display this intimacy, whether it is through interaction with peers, objects, or other creatures.

b. 1993. Athens, Greece. Arietta Chandris is an artist living and working in London, UK. She studied an MA in Arts & Cultural Management at King’s College London and a BSc in Anthropology at University College London, following which she explored a variety of working environments, before finally returning to her artistic practice on a professional capacity at the end of 2018. Arietta’s work is focused on exploring human/nature relationships and narratives. Employing visual storytelling, research, and symbolism, she is particularly interested in how humans exist within places and how world-views can vary with each culture and lived experience. Her practice is primarily oil painting, with a curiosity in exploring other mediums, including printmaking, drawing and collage. Arietta prefers to work in a series format, allowing her the freedom to explore ideas and topics from more than one angle. In 2019 she commenced work on her ongoing Finding Closeness series, the focus of which is to recreate fleeting moments of closeness suspended in time. By creating the paintings on layered backgrounds composed of writing (both that of others published across various outlets, and her own), the series seeks to explore the relationship between humanity and the natural world. This creates a depth and texture to the paintings, that invites the viewer to take a closer look and consider the various storylines that could be present within these artworks. In late 2021, she released her first group of limited edition handmade relief prints under the series title ‘Same same, but different’. A project that she plans to continue each year with new designs and print releases at semi-regular intervals.
