About The Artwork

In "Lunam," we find ourselves amidst a veritable visual symphony, a composition that deftly navigates the realm where the tangible and the ethereal converge, all against a backdrop of rich, intoxicating red wine hues. This painting is, in essence, a poetic discourse on the timeless interplay between humanity and the natural world, brimming with symbolism that beckons us to partake in a nuanced narrative. Our gaze is immediately drawn to the lower reaches of the canvas, where a pigeon takes center stage—a creature suspended in the liminal space, the bridge, if you will, between the untamed wilderness and the constructed world of humankind. It is a symbol of our shared existence with nature, an emblematic embodiment of the delicate equilibrium we navigate in our daily lives. Turning our attention to the left, a solitary lightbulb dangles, casting a luminescent glow on the proceedings. It is a stark representation of human ingenuity and the creative spark that drives invention—a beacon of illumination in our collective journey. Yet, it is the moon that reigns supreme in this mesmerizing tableau, an undeniable protagonist, and the harbinger of profound contemplation. As the ultimate symbol of the original creator, it guides our thoughts towards the cosmic and the enigmatic, urging us to reflect upon the forces that underpin our very existence. In the hands of the artist, "Lunam" is a visual opus, an exploration of the dichotomy between our earthly experiences and the celestial influences that shape them. It is a painting that beckons us to delve deeper into the mysteries of our universe, all within the confines of its sumptuous crimson canvas.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
