About The Artwork
Mabarule (name meaning 'big foot') was one of the big tuskers in the Kruger National Park. He died in 2004 of natural causes at an estimated age of 56. Examination of his carcass revealed that he had severe arthritic calcifications in several vertebrae, what must have given him severe pain in his later years. In spite of this he was an extremely docile elephant. The length of his right tusk was 2.78 metres and his left tusk was 2.57 metres weighing at 52kg and 48 kg respectively. The toe nails on his front feet were upturned and cracked (source: Kruger National Park). After reading his story I was inspired to do this painting of Mabarule, in remembrance of this gentle giant.

As a South African, I am privileged to have the African bush on my doorstep. There is nothing that replenishes the soul more than a visit to a game park, to experience the sounds, smells and richness that the bushveld has to offer. In my wildlife paintings I want to capture the splendour of these majestic, powerful, but vulnerable animals. May we never forget them. As a late starter as an artist, painting is still a hobby. I feel such a great sense of satisfaction to be able to be creative and enjoy the calming effect when I put brush to canvas. I am residing in Cape Town, South Africa, with my wife and beautiful daughter. We cannot wait for our next trip to the Kruger Park.
