Maelstrom III Painting

This painting is the third in a series of three pieces. In this series, I was largely channelling my anxiety into my mark making as this serves as a portal to accessing the larger questions of self and non-linear thinking. The relationship between my self conscious and the materials becomes more finessed and ultimately a visual language is born. When did you realize you wanted to become an artist, and what was your motivation? Very early on.I knew I wanted to be an artist in some capacity, I was always drawing, and it took more and more precedent over everything else in my life. Early on, my inclinations were more toward the graphic arts, and that’s ultimately what I ended up studying in art school. How would you describe your work? On the whole, I would say my work is largely abstract, with gestural marks serving as a backdrop for highly-graphic foregrounds. My work tends to be very layered, sculptural and intense. What are your current inspirations? All my friends, my community, architecture and technology. How has your art changed or evolved over time? In the early phases of my career, my work was more illustrative and graphic and over time my mark-making and compositions have been becoming more and more abstract and streamlined.
