About The Artwork

Inspiration for the series was the issue of censorship and media presence of homosexual themes in my home country. I was interested in the nature of aesthetic and ethical meanings of censorship. Censorship is most frequently connected with pornography and with the protection of identities of crime suspects and victims. In my paintings I combine all of these meanings. In Poland according to law homosexuality has not been a crime since 1932, however in the society it is met with great rejection and aggression. Why cannot we see the faces of kissing men? Censorship suggests that we are dealing with something perverse and at the same time forbidden. Men on the images violate the unwritten law but also become its victims. A simple kiss grows in the eyes of the public to obscenity. Were the images censored because of their erotic character, or perhaps in order to protect the presented man from possible consequences of coming out?
