"Make Connections" is one of six paintings created for the "Shift" series that visualizes how we can embrace our connectedness in difficult times to shift and move forward. In this painting, woven strips of hand-painted paper suggest both uniqueness and similarity. I wanted to create a tapestry of many threads, like a gathering of many peoples, empowering and strong. Selected for the Juniper Rag Magazine V3. SHIFT issue published in January 2022. NOTE: The painting is on 140 lb. (300 gsm), acid-free, archival watercolor paper with a final varnish (front and back) for added protection. Keywords: collage, lines, expressive, paper, teal, green, yellow, tapestry, 11x17 Size: 28 x 43 cm | 11" x 17" Substrate: 140 lb (300 gsm) paper Medium: Acrylic paint and mediums, pencil, ink, paper elements Varnish: satin varnish with UV protection Signature: signed and dated on back Read to hang: yes Framed: yes, black; 1.5" with white mat

STATEMENT: My acrylic mixed-media paintings on paper and canvas explore connection and diversity. I join familiar elements with ambiguous abstractions to create paintings that express the strong connection that exists among seemingly disconnected things. My creative process is both planned and spontaneous. I use color, line, and texture in an intricate way, and sweep bold marks across individual hand-painted paper paintings that I tear and use in my canvas art, painted in a more subtle and minimal way. As I add, intersect, and overlap elements, a cohesive and complementary presence emerges, giving visual confirmation of our differences and how they so often enhance our connectedness. /// BIO: Abstract painter Cynthia Coldren explores the concept of connection and diversity through her mixed-media paintings on paper and canvas. Using paint, paper, ink, crayon, and pencil, she creates abstract art that expresses the sense of connection that exists in diversity. Cynthia lives in Richardson, Texas. She studied fine art as an undergraduate student, transitioning her early representational direction to abstract painting in the last decade. She has received recognition and awards in recent curated art shows and has exhibited her paintings in solo and juried exhibitions both online and in North Texas. She is a member of the Texas Artist Coalition (TAC) and other regional organizations. (www.cynthiacoldrenfineart.com)
