About The Artwork

My ladies represent an extension of me that I created during the pandemic, through all the trying times. A reflection of the numerous inner conversations and mixed emotions I had through the couple of years: confusion, sadness, frustration, joy and hopefulness. Like many people, I had a lot more time to myself at home and in my studio, which means I spent a lot of time examining and dissecting the different aspects of my life, my family… and putting myself in the microscope. The uncertainty of the situation forced me to face my fears and insecurities. The portrait has multiple facial lines and shapes, referencing to the state of skepticism and self-doubt. However, at the same time the eyes on the faces are steady and calm, grounding the face, grounding the mind. The figure is wearing what looks like a qipao (cheongsam) with Mandarin collars, reflecting my Taiwanese heritage. The garments are in bright colours and patterns, as reminders that although we are in an unsettling period of time, there is still so much positives that came out of the pandemic. We need to remain hopeful so we can do better in the future. We need to continue to dream… to progress and find fulfillment; to live in a beautiful state.

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan. I grew up in the mountains of Southern Taipei, in a house my hippie, artistic parents hand built. It was a special time for me, climbing up the winding trails, adventuring through the ravine… The fog from the mountains, the smell of the jungle, and sounds of the insects are imbedded deep within me. It has been more than 20 years now since I have been back there. It felt like a surreal dream. Was it real? My creations have always been connected to that time, my magical childhood moment in the mountains. Nostalgia. I will continue to try to recreate the senses I felt when I’m there. I want to continue this dream, to progress and find my fulfillment: to live in a simple and beautiful state. - At the age of nine, we immigrated to Vancouver. I discovered my passion for art, design and music from my artistic parents. Between music and fashion, I chose to pursue a fashion degree at the age of sixteen. Upon receiving my bachelor’s degree in fashion design, I worked for fashion brands such as Lululemon Athletica (Vancouver), Joe Fresh (Toronto), Greta Constantine (Toronto) and Araks (New York City). I further pushed my creative boundary by working for international design house Viktor & Rolf in Amsterdam, Netherlands. After Amsterdam, I was presented a unique opportunity to pursue a musical career as a pop singer in Taiwan. However, fashion brought me back to Toronto. I continued my love for fashion as the Head Designer at Line and John+Jenn, then as a Senior Designer at Roots. Under my own name, this is the next chapter of my journey...
