About The Artwork

Paint and filler on aluminium. Based on the Maritime archaeology of Sten Sjostrand and the ceramic discoveries of the Wanli shipwreck off the coast of Malaysia. This piece reflects the movement and rhythms of water on fragmented blue and white shards. The patterns and motifs on the crumpled aluminium rectangles approximate the Chinese trade ceramics of the Wanli period (1600-1627), without attempting to reproduce them directly.

I work in a variety of mediums, both in 2 and 3D. My current 2D pieces use layers of plaster and filler mixed with different materials including: soot, sand, pigment, paint and rust. The pieces are thoroughly worked and re-worked to reveal a richly layered and intricately patterned surface. Although the subject matter is purposely ambiguous, there are references to a wide range of sources, both natural and man-made. Many of the pieces were conceived as serial or multiple images, with as many as five panels being exhibited together as one piece.

A recent line of inquiry has been an interest in maps and what they represent. The idea that our view of the world is shaped by such an abstract concept, that wars have been fought over scribbles on a page, and nationality and cultural identity is tied up with maps and boundaries is an intriguing one.
Working directly on old maps, using rivers, mountain contours and national boundaries to create new charts, these pieces explore the pictorial nature of maps and map making, whilst also referencing the tradition of landscape painting.
