'Malmesbury Evening' is my interpretation of the light and drama that envelopes the view of Malmesbury town as it sits atop its hill, the other side of Daniel's Well, and the River Avon. Daniel's Well is a beautiful part of Malmesbury in Wiltshire. With wonderful views across to the Abbey (founded 675 CE), famously depicted in several works by JMW Turner, Daniel's Well sits astride the river Avon. Scene of warm sunsets, and glorious sun rises, with the small valley created by the meandering River Avon, It was here, where, according to William of Malmesbury: "That he (Daniel) might reduce the force of his rebelious body, he used to immerse himself up to the shoulders in a spring near to the monastery. There, caring neither for the frosty rigour of the winter nor the mists rising from the marshy ground in summer, he used to pass the night unharmed." According to sources 'Daniel' was Daniel of Winchester, one of the great Bishops of the early Church of England, and worth researching to understand his links with the ancient town of Malmesbury. With the dog walker's delight of foreground fields that hide the well, and meandering river, the eye is led up to the Abbey and the Spire of old St Paul's church. I was lucky enough to capture the sun's fading summer light, and enjoy the beauty of a summer's evening in this wonderful place. With paints, and easel to hand, I created my impression of the sunlit, county atmosphere I felt surrounding me, pausing to wonder if Daniel had stood where I was, once upon a time, enjoying the beauty of the light.

Working from Combe Martin in beautiful North Devon, Chris is never short of inspiration and never far from gorgeous subjects: from the mysteries and colours of woodlands and rivers to seascapes and secret coves; Devon has them all. Chris's work allows the viewer to get involved, to imagine the space, fill in the gaps of action and participation, and, even, guess what might be behind a tree, a boat or building that isn’t discernible from the creation on canvas. With time at Reading Art College in the early eighties, Chris evolved his own approach: ‘’My approach to each representation is one of total mental, and, spiritual involvement, I try to be completely ‘present’ in the process. The peace and joy I experience in putting the work down on canvass or paper, whether in oils, pastels or acrylics, is one I strive to pass on to the observer.’’ Chris's work happily hangs on the walls of occasional exhibition goers and private collectors alike in both the UK and Internationally.
