ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As a multi-disciplinary artist that does not confine in one genre, I often create a transitional piece that links two different bodies of work together. Marigold was created after The Dot Project (a body of works experimenting with circles) and was the first of Urban Flora (a series of floral creations against an urban background). Childhood memories surface as I remember seeing marigolds in both my grandmothers' gardens, planted for their saturated color and for their pest deterrent quality. I never liked their smell but was always intrigued by the folds of their petals that look almost like crushed paper. This artwork was a visual quest to recreate the memory of the mixed feelings this little flower had embedded in me. I took it out of proportion by depicting it larger than life, and like my previous Dot project I placed it in the center of my canvas. Crushed crayons were used to depict the "crushed" petals I saw in my childhood. I am always interested in the symbolism of things and marigold has mixed symbolism, just like my childhood feelings of it: -Beauty and warmth of the rising sun -Despair and grief over the loss of love -Creativity and drive to succeed -Desire for wealth -Sacred offerings to the Gods -Promoting cheer and good relations

“Now that’s what I call art!” — Master Photographer Roy DeCarava, National Medal of Arts 2006, describing Tina Psoinos’s work. Multidisciplinary Artist and Fine Art Photographer Tina Psoinos’s extensive body of work showcases an alternative view of the world she sees, one that blurs the borders of reality and imagination. Intrigued by the ephemeral, ever-changing nature of the street art scene, Psoinos creates urban inspired art using mixed traditional and street art techniques with street art aesthetics while sneaking in personal references. Her portfolio includes a number of ongoing series that range from minimal to very complex imagery. Works explore female rights, empowerment and equality through pop culture, as well as love through social media. Drawing on powerful imagery, she uses these concepts to also create and develop inspired site-specific installations. Based in NYC, Psoinos has won numerous awards for her artistry and is currently shortlisted at EMST The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens Greece for her Empty Pro(e)mises proposal. Her work is in private and public collections around the world.
