About The Artwork

I’m interested in the formal, abstract qualities of highways, interchanges, bridges, and other human-made megastructures. These examples of great human imagination suggest to me the work of the Abstract Expressionist heroes of my youth; the monumental brushwork of Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning or the elegant calligraphic scribbles of Cy Twombly. At the same time, I view them as nostalgic artifacts from the golden age of carbon-based fuels that evoke bittersweet feelings of loss and regret. They hark back to a time, especially in Southern California where I grew up, when we moved from place to place without a thought in our collective head as to how we were affecting the environment and our natural inheritance. I see them now as illusory “free” ways where we painted our dreams with enormous concrete brush strokes, all the while making unintended changes to the world’s climate and the future of civilization. McArthur Maze was inspired by the McArthur Distribution Structure that connects the San Francisco Bay Bridge to the East Bay freeways. The piece is made up of a grid of 6 12"x12" paintings that together have the effect of a stained glass window. I'm always looking for the spiritual contradictions in humanity's grand gestures.
