About The Artwork

1947, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Santos Dumont airport. A "Constel" or "Connie", for the intimate ones, a jewel of aeronautical mechanics for the time, is on the departure for a flight towards Paris while a thunderstorm goes away and leaves behind it the orange light of the sky's dawn. From the airport, two emblems of Rio can be seen under the wings of the plane : on the left the Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de açúcar in Portuguese, the official language of Brazil) and its famous cable car ; on the right the “hunchback” mountain (Corcovado) with, at its summit, the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo redentor). * For those who are interested in the "little story": On the occasion of the death of Jean-Paul Belmondo, watch with pleasure "The Man from Rio" and, more precisely the sequence of his arrival in Brazil, you will find many elements of this scene there. * For those interested in aeronautical history and technics: Santos Dumont Airport, opened in 1937. Santos Dumont, Franco-Brazilian, was one of the pioneers of aeronautics at the start of the 20th century. He lived much of his life in Paris and was famous there for his exploits. The aircraft is a Lockheed Constellation L-049, an iconic American aircraft from this "golden age" of aviation; the first model with a long lineage that will finally mark the end of the era of airliners with piston engines, then overtaken by jets (turbojet). The engine starting sequence has begun: n ° 3 spits out its flames, under the impulse of a slightly pushed run-up while n ° 4 makes its first laps and spits its engine oil smoke, typical of a radial piston engine where the oil stagnates in the combustion chambers of the low cylinders and therefore evacuates when starting. They are radial Wright R-3350 Cyclone in 2 rows of 9 cylinders of 55 l of displacement; 2,200 hp turbocharged. Its livery: Pan Air do Brasil, a former Brazilian company which flied from 1930 to 1965 before being taken over by VARIG. In the background, on the right, are precisely two planes of VARIG, a historic Brazilian company, created in 1927, after many years of success, it disappeared in 2006 : in flight, a German Junkers JU-52 in presentation flight and, on the tarmac, an American Curtiss C-46, two military carriers converted into airliners at the end of the Second World War.
