About The Artwork

I made this after reading about another boat that sank in the Mediterranean Sea. I expressed the vulnerability of the boat by making it out of paper (a folded boat). At the same time, I accompanied this boat with a golden cloud as a sign of divine providence. As an expression of hope for a safe arrival. Mixed media (paper, plaster, and acrylic on canvas). The folded paper boat is made of a part of the cover of the October issue of #TubelightMagazine (TL#118) (= an art magazine).

JW Rijneveldshoek is a professional multidisciplinary artist (painter, fine art photographer & writer) from Rotterdam (Netherlands). At the moment he lives at Heemstede, close to Amsterdam. JW on his paintings: 'I'd been making art through photo editing – a.k.a. fine art photography – for years (see www.rhynoart.com). In 2018, I started painting again. I am and always will be a storyteller. Even as a painter. I work without sketches beforehand. I start with a title and I write it down. That title awakens a certain feeling in me. So I sit down in front of the empty canvas and let that feeling sink in until I know which movement and color to start with. Then I start to paint. I paint without brushes. I apply the paint to the canvas with my hands and fingers to reinforce the intuitive process. As soon as I no longer know how to proceed, I sit down in front of the canvas again. And I wait until I feel how to proceed. With which movement, with which color, with which technique. This is how my paintings arise from that one title. JW: 'My last name is quite complicated for people who don't speak Dutch. But, for those who speak English, it sounds like "Rhine felt hook", which is a little poem in itself.' ;-)
