About The Artwork

Medusa was once a beautiful maiden in ancient Greece. She caught the eye of Poseidon, the sea god, and they engaged in a forbidden tryst within the temple of Athena. Furious at the desecration of her temple, Athena transformed Medusa’s luscious hair into writhing snakes and cursed her gaze, turning anyone who looked into her eyes to stone. This is a master copy of “Medusa”by Caravaggio. Caravaggio’s painting of Medusa is a captivating portrayal of the mythological figure. According to the Greek myth, Medusa was a Gorgon, a monstrous creature with snakes for hair whose gaze could turn onlookers to stone. In Caravaggio’s interpretation, he depicts the moment after Medusa’s head was severed by the hero Perseus. The painting captures the horror and agony of the moment, with Medusa’s face contorted in anguish as blood spurts from her neck and her serpentine hair writhes in all directions. Caravaggio’s use of chiaroscuro, also known as dramatic contrast between light and shadow, adds to the intensity of the scene. The painting is renowned for its realism and psychological depth, exemplifying Caravaggio’s mastery of the Baroque style. It’s believed that Caravaggio created this masterpiece around 1597, during his tumultuous life marked by artistic brilliance and personal strife. It was more than just painting; it was a dive into the depths of human passion and mythology. I wanted spectators to experience the raw intensity of the scene and get lured into the story of Medusa’s tragic transformation.
