About The Artwork

Oil and acrylic and collage on canvas – this artwork was made using different techniques (oil, acrylics, dripping ...). The painting is a sort of "Memento mori" in a pop art key. The phrase originates from a particular custom typical of ancient Rome: when a general returned to the city after a triumph of war and paraded in the streets he collected the honors that were bestowed by the crowd, he ran the risk of being overwhelmed by the arrogance and delusions of size. To prevent this from happening, someone behind him would say the sentence: "Respice post te. Hominem te memento »(" Look behind you. Remember that you are a man "). The memento mori or vanitas then becomes popular in the Christian painting of the Counter-Reformation in the field of still life and in baroque painting: the most typical example is that of a skull positioned next to flowers or fruit and represents the transience of life. The picture represents a contest in a pop and ironic key of our consumerist system with some references to symbols typical of pop art. - The comic strip: Scrooge McDuck represents the spasmodic search for wealth while an ironic mickey mouse laughs at such craving; - The mark of a detergent represents consumerism; - The skull, inspired by a famous work by Damien Hirst ("For the love gold" 2007), takes us back to the harsh reality: no one is immortal and everything is ephemeral. - La “femme fatale”…. Memento mori ...

Damn, transfixed by the passion, the love we survive and Art makes us immortal William Goethe Born in Cesena (FC) on 12/11/1965 and resident in Cesenatico ITALY From an early age I loved to paint and draw. Fascinated by contemporary art and, in particular, from pop art and street art has started to create works inspired by the world of movie, fashion and graphic art In my works prevails a traditional figurative representation alongside the use of modern techniques, such as action painting, dripping etc ... associated with the use display of words and terminology in order to create a synergy between the spectator visual and aspects phonetic / sound The note of irony that characterizes the works, using a blend of aspects of advertising and using figures taken from comics, has the function to make it more "lightweight" the message of the work.
