memento mori Painting

My paintings I offer at Saatchiart I summarize under the title "home". I work with photo albums of my own family, with photographies that I get from clients or with photos that I purchase. Many of the works which are included in this series I draw in oil on burlap. Burlap is a very raw material and I think it fits well to illustrate a time that no longer exists. Because I´m interested in every person´s attitude, it´s charisma and it´s setting I work a long time on every detail. This photo was taken in Wroclaw in 1944. A friend of mine sat with me over her old photographs for an entire afternoon and told the stories about the pictures. I was allowed to decide for myself which photos I chose as templates for my home series. The baby in the arms of the mother is just this friend. What especially inspired me was the look of the child. While the mother is laughing, the baby looks as serious as if it had already seen the war with it´s own eyes. It´s gaze and knowledge come from a world beyond our perception. I sewed the child's clothes with woolen thread. In this way, the contrast between the "knowing" child and the body into which it was born is even more accentuated.
