About The Artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, UV protection, oil, varnish, gold and copper pigments, fabrics on pigment prints on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. While Peter Vahlefeld’s earlier work dealt more directly with the theme of the art market, the current exhibition springs from his observation of the layering of time and history on cities like New York, London, Paris and Berlin. It seems that Vahlefeld recognised many of his own conundrums and concerns in NYC, where fragments and other signs of its regimented, controlling past are visible alongside the more chaotic present. The ambiguous relationship between surface and depth, paint and prints, the continuous process of revealing and concealing is a theme that has run through the artist’s work. Barriers are erected and breached. Systems are evoked, then subverted, grids are laid down then encroached upon, and lettering is made partially illegible. Each artwork has been constructed by sanding down into layers of color and prints, which, like geological strata, have already been laid down. The canvas is a vibrant community where your eyes are led to cul-de-sacs, dead ends, places where you get lost; there’s a chaotic, organic process in action.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld studied at Parsons School of Design, NYC (BFA) and currently lives in Berlin. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), and Sotheby's (Vienna). His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, and India. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF.
