Made in isolation, experiencing the transformational power of darkness. A caterpillar does not go into its cocoon wanting to emerge a caterpillar. In the same vein, there is no returning to ‘normal’ after this period in our history.

It may not be comfortable right now, but if we do our best to move through it with all of the grace that we can muster, it is possible to accept this blackout as something that the world must go through in order to evolve.

Looking again to the butterfly as a symbol, this time has made it abundantly clear that we need to realign with the natural cycles and rhythms that we as a species have lost touch with. The irreverent way we grow our food and treat the animal kingdom, the backward way our health, education and financial systems run; all need to be re-evaluated through this lens. Us vs them separatism does not work - it has taken a global, man-made state of (dis)ease to shine a light on this malfunction in thinking.
Looking forward and beyond the pain of our current situation, I hold a lot of hope for we can consciously shift, and grow. For the changes we can give wings to.

Working under the moniker Cheeky Observer, Alicia McFadzean is a contemporary artist originally from Australia, now based in South Africa. Guided heavily by her imagination, she draws inspiration from intangible structures of light, of shadow and energetic frequency. Folding in elements from the natural world, the human form, a hint of geometry, or language; the overall result presents itself as a colourful dance between realism and abstraction.
