A key visual reference point for my new series of paintings ‘Metanoia’ has been science fiction films from the late 70's to early 80's and their depiction of the supernatural. In films such as 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' and 'Poltergeist' everyday realities were seemingly punctured and pulled apart, merging into borderless, undetermined states, a tactile sense of something 'Other' that was achieved through none CGI processes. UFO's weren't just cliched computer generated metallic saucers but amorphous lights emanating out from liquid clouds, and intermediary depictions of ghosts, that seemed simultaneously divine and threatening, felt both tangible and organic. Whilst the origin of my compositions is developed through a process of digitally collaging photographic elements, I hope to imbue the work with a tactile reality by filtering this digital imagery through a final stage of painting in oils.
