About The Artwork

This painting is of a woman called Mette, who has been through chemotherapy after having breast cancer. The painting was painted at the same time she was going through cancer treatment and purpose is to reflect the positive spirit and determination Mette had, that this illness wouldn't kill her, but only make her stronger. This painting was also to reflect the beauty in this attitude, and to show that you don't have to have hair to be beautiful as beauty isn't just on the surface. As the artist, I developed a very close friendship with Mette over this time, and she has now found out that she is clear of any cancer. PLEASE NOTE - This painting is a selected piece for the Royal Scottish Academy exhibition 'New Contemporaries' 24 March – 18 April 2018 and will be entered into the BP Portrait award 2018

The motivation behind my portraits is an enduring curiosity in people; in the timelessness and beauty of the human spirit and its emotional resonance when challenged by adversity. My work tells the narrative of human experience and strength of character. My aim is to inform and empower others with these stories to inspire confidence and positive outlook. Every person has a unique story to tell, and while each story may be similar, I want to celebrate the beauty of individuality, empower difference and champion the spirit of resilience. My portraits are deliberately monumental in scale and attention-seeking. This is to support and reflect the strength of the subject, and to stop people from walking past and ignoring them. By utilising hyper realistic style in my painting, nothing is hidden. The painterly quality and application of paint is a tribute to the beauty of the texture, rich tone, smoothness and vibrant health of the subject’s skin.
