This painting is a phenomenological study in the bacteria that reside within us, all those amazing helpers who keep us strong and healthy, as well as the ones we don't want. With more and more research being done on our microbiome, with more understanding of the significance of the gut-brain connection, and the more I experience my own need to heal my own gut, the more I seem to experience an appreciation for just how amazing these beneficial bacteria and yeast are. In having to heal my gut, and learning first hand how much is involved in achieving and maintaining a healthy gut flora, it's starting to feel like I am tending a a very important garden, one inside my gut, and one that demands my absolute and complete attention and energy at present. "...understanding the microbiome—human, animal, and environmental—is as important as the human genome." The human microbiota consists of a wide variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other single-celled animals that live in the body. The microbiome is the name given to all of the genes inside these microbial cells. These paintings are part of my personal exploration of my microbiome and my healing journey. They are my own special way of giving some much needed love and appreciation to the "super heroes" of my amazing and beautiful immune system. This piece is part of my Worlds Within Series. In this series, I paint what I imagine to be the microscopic worlds that live inside and around us on the microbial level. We may not be aware of the magnitude of this world just yet, but I believe the microbial world holds immense significance for the nature of reality, and we are only just beginning to grasp it. I stumbled upon this world when I got seriously ill, and realized that my gut was in such dire straits that I needed to learn all I could about how to heal myself or face my imminent mortality. That's when I found out that our world is ruled by microbial life, and we either embrace it or face our own demise. I believe we are in the 11th hour with regard to our natural and physical worlds, and have gone well beyond flirting with our idea of immortality and now face the 6th mass extinction. This series of paintings shows what I interpret as the microbial world within and around us, the world we have ignored too long and need to befriend and work with. And NOW. There is no more time.
