About The Artwork

Floating Woman / ANA KANE The Jung Center March 4, 2017 Houston, Texas Carl G. Jung, frequently identified as one of the pillars of modern psychiatry and psychoanalysis, is not commonly understood as an artist. His Liber Novus, also known as The Red Book, is an impressive work of art and literary creativity. At a moment in life when Jung found himself retreating from his professional activities and concentrating on personal issues, this book, littered with medieval-like drawings and ancient texts, emerged. In an impressive journey to explore the unconscious, the Swiss physician developed a poetic and psychoanalytic treasure that draws from the past. Jung’s results demonstrate the power of introspection in the search for the archetypical in one’s cultural context. In Ana Kane’s case (as in many other artists, young or mature), the exploration and reevaluation of symbols and traditional elements can be a transformative tool for understanding individual and collective identity. In Floating Woman, Kane weaves common conflicts concerning femininity and inheritance along with traditional prints and themes of her native Mexico. During her process, she has found metaphors involving fear and safety that are manifest in her representations of water, cloth, the female form, money, and indigenous patterns, making this exhibition a relaxed yet honest portrait of her unconscious self. Many of her recent works display complex and entrancing fabrics that tease the onlooker, unable to really see the scenes unfolding in the background. The voyeuristic quality of Derecho de Nacimiento, Creencias, and Mujeres Flotantes stand in sharp contrast to Donas or Mexican Heritage. It is in these latter pieces that the female subjects appear in the foreground as if the artist had forcefully pushed the fabrics aside and exposed her visual thoughts in an unapologetic fashion. What remains a constant in the entire series is her search for portraying a more mature identity, one that ponders on and yet remains inside the boundaries of the society she has been a part of since childhood.
