About The Artwork

Mirror, Mirror Fragmentary, flipped reflections of ourselves ...at a moment in time. We never quite see ourselves as the world sees us. Reflections on how we see ourselves begin with our first self-glimpses in the mirror. What – who? – do we see when we look in the mirror? Is that all there is or is there much more to us? Background and Reflections: Looking in the mirror is an interesting activity at best. At times, the image reflected back at us could be perceived as scary, illuminating, lonely, joyful, beautiful, or peaceful. Sometimes we see ourselves looking back, sometimes a younger or older version of ourselves. It could even be a stranger. Mirrors sometimes reflect what we want to see, sometimes quite the opposite. Always, though, our reflection in a mirror is only a fragmentary and flipped version of ourselves at one moment in time. Regardless, I know of very few people who actually enjoy their time in front of a mirror. I, and most people I know, merely glance and run. "Mirror, Mirror" was my way of beginning to address a few issues. Primary among them was the challenges faced by women in Western cultures - specifically in the United States. Myself included, many young girls and women spend the majority of our lives bemoaning the fact that we are not pretty or thin or shapely or tall or buxom or ... -- you name it. The tendency is for us to constantly feel inadequate in the face of "the beautiful people" touted in the media and press. Parading before us, we see perfect women, movie stars, perfect hair, and yes - they are all (or most) thin with perfect skin and teeth. Combating that flood of imagery and messages has been a life-long challenge for me personally. Gradually, as decade flowed into decade, I have grown progressively more carefree about looks, instead grateful for who and what I am, wrinkles and bloats and more. Consequently, this painting shows two very different and conflicting views of the woman, almost seeming as if they are two different individuals. Which is real? Most importantly, how do we feel as a result of our perception of Who We Are? My Philosophy In imperfection, lies reality, beauty, and character. As a visual artist, my work examines and responds to the notion of narrative and the interplay between singularity and universality in storytelling. The more personal the story, the more universal its message. Focusing on the imperfect in a world that embraces limited or constrictive definitions of beauty, my goal is to challenge those definitions and perceptions. My hope is that I influence a change of mindset wherein beauty truly is redefined in the eye of each beholder. Unique beauty lies beneath the surface of every individual.

PHILOSOPHY: In imperfection, lies reality, beauty, and character. - STATEMENT: I create abstract assemblages in shape, color, and line. Finding beauty in the unfinished, my work focuses on relationship dynamics and every-day or chance encounters as they impact identity. With intuition and investigative precision, I explore the energy, motivations, chemistry, and undercurrents between individuals - from the inside, out. My creative process involves building a character in layers, mimicking the way in which identities are formed throughout a lifetime: layer by colorful or complex layer. I let the form and placement of figures and shapes imply subsurface content and emotion. Focused on transience and imperfection, some common themes that run through my work are telling the unknown or hidden stories. - APPROACH: My creative approach parallels my analytical process in that my goal is to try to figure out or resolve challenging situations, encounters, experiences, or relationships. As a result, the beginning phases of new paintings can often appear explosive, congested, chaotic, or seemingly overflowing in conflicting colors and content. These expressionistic elements are integral to the entirety of a piece, providing layers and much of the substrata and undercurrents that need to be emphasized or masked in later stages of the creative process. In later stages my creative process transitions from largely intuitive to a dance between the objective and subjective perspectives in the editing phase, where I construct, deconstruct, reveal, or mask details as needed, weaving a metaphorical interpretation of experiences, while leaving each work enigmatic enough to invite viewers to engage. - FOCUS: My art honors survival and the individual spirit and history of people as they coexist, survive, and interact.
