About The Artwork

This painting is part of a series exploring the material properties of indigo while embracing its historical resonances. Indigo has been traded into Europe since classical times, and is entangled one way or another with the global history of trade. In that known history are all the lost and unrecorded stories of the people who were impacted by that trade. The history of London is of a city of trade. Our own histories of who we are are as the people of this city are bound up within this same history. The Lethe is the river of forgetting. These works are abstract places to sit in and remember.
