ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Part of the 'Broken Circle' series - an ongoing system art project. A set of 18 component tiles are generated from two 'master' circles which have been sliced into a 3x3 grid. The tiles are shuffled and iteratively rearranged into new 2x3 compositions. Using these parameters there are over 13M unique configurations. With a dataset so large, subjectively appealing combinations are discovered from a process guided by chance and intuition. This sculptural relief panel has been constructed using the above rule set and then overlayed with a yellow circular form at the centre of a purple ground. Beneath the purple ground, there is a layer of red underpainting that peeks through in places, bringing warmth to colour field. The works in this series are non-objective but seek to re-express the original 'master' forms in new ways. Presented in a 12mm width timber float frame hand painted deep green with matt varnish (as pictured) with eyelets and hanging cord fitted to back ready to hang. Painting is titled, dated (2023) and signed by the artist on reverse in black marker.

James D Wilson (b.1982) is an artist and designer based in South East London, UK, working predominantly in paint and relief on layered surfaces constructed from cardboard and wood. His process starts as an act of reconstructing a memory of a time or place using fragmentary, visual phrases that make up an environment that have been held in the mind. In re-assembling and remembering, the resulting composition ride the line between abstraction and figuration combining bold, reduced graphical forms with the language of landscapes, both architectural and natural. The materials used in his works, together with their limited colour palettes have a utilitarian quality to them, following in the footsteps of constructivist/concrete artists of the 50s/60s. The cutting and brushwork are predominantly made freehand with no masking tape involved, which lends itself to feeling more human. There is a tension between the planned and unplanned, the finished and unfinished, the loud and the quiet. The pieces featured here all contribute to an ongoing exploration into expanded painting, visual rhythm and negative space.
