About The Artwork

This work is a metaphor for a moonlit sky. Conceptually, I use a grid as a metaphorical sandbox to generate contemplative forms. The subject matter takes on poetic and romantic themes, as they are contemplative in nature. Philosophically, I view a grid as a window, where it is contradictory as it is both a liberating, contemplative, and restrictive space. Creatively, the grid is free to use as a framework to make paintings and drawings. Its restrictions give parameters that can be adjusted as the image reveals itself.

Ian's work uses a grid as a conceptual window and contemplative space that can be used as a metaphorical sandbox that can be manipulated to generate contemplative forms or abstract shapes that take poetic or romantic tones. Ian's work explores themes of time, color, observation, waiting, and confinement. He begins each of his small to mid-size and occasionally large works with a set of parameters and rules and then improvises them going forward to reach planned or unexpected conclusions.
