Painting: Ink, Paint, Plaster, Metal, Mixed media on Wood, Stainless Steel.
I’m a metal artist applying metal works to painting. I seek the harmony of these two different categories and try to make them in good balance. This artwork ‘Moonlight’ also includes metal (stainless steel), which is combined with various other materials (wood, plaster, etc.).
I usually get inspiration from nature. After the sun went down and darkness fell, I realize how precious the light is. Even if the moonlight is pale, in the shadow of the night I can feel vivid displays of the light with my mind. By using many pieces of shiny stainless steel, I’d like to express the brilliant moonlight in my mind.
It’s hard to manipulate metals because much time and effort are required to complete one work. I cut, weld, grind and polish lots of stainless steel pieces one by one in various sizes. And aside from this process, I make a wood panel with paulownia wood and apply plaster and some other undercoats on it. And then I drop the liquid pigment on the panel. ‘Moonlight’ is finally completed after the panel and pieces of stainless steel are combined into one. The thickness of the wood panel is 3cm. Total thickness includes stainless steel is 5cm. The sides of the panel are painted in gray, which is in harmony with the color of stainless steel. And it’s already ready to hang and will be shipped in the two-ply cardboard box with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Whenever I contemplate and make the work, my major concern is the space that the work will get to be placed in. So it’s possible to adjust the size or color of the work, according to the collectors’ request.
I think the artwork is a special language to an artist and that makes it possible to communicate with people. As for me, Metal is such a suitable material to express my thoughts. I'd like to share with everyone the beautiful sensibilities I talk through artworks.
