Moonlight Painting

This painting was inspired by a visit to a beautiful house in Scotland in winter. In the evenings my partner and i would walk in the grounds of the house. At the end of the garden a fast flowing river ran and the leafless trees that surrounded the river and grounds almost spoke directly to me. I started making this painting in the winter of 2018. My mother was dying. My mother lived a long and good life and there was enormous beauty in her dying process. I think this work on some level was an attempt to record the beauty of the end of life process. The bottom half of the painting is dark but full of abstract shapes and marks, a shadowy figure looks over the river lit by the moonlight. The brushstrokes and marks weave across the top half of the painting as the tree branches reach and touch. The whole of the canvas surface is alive with marks and brushstrokes knitting the illusion and the integrity of the painting together. A peaceful and contemplative work.
