About The Artwork

Sometimes, my eyes or my mind or my "mind's eye " wonders. where, I can stare at something, contently caught in a daze, without thinking any specific thought, entirely at peace within the moment that is present. I am often fascinated by particular color combinations throughout my garden, some by design others, which have volunteered themselves. However, it's the beauty in the abstract that I feel and am drawn too and ultimately that which I paint; and though that can be quite at random and the moment might last, but for a few seconds, it is of complete delight and often of insight. A sudden glance, unspecific in its nature or detail, becomes abstract in its honesty. A look up at the sky, a sunset, or a window view out onto a tree. A glance downward at a pattern made up of light and shadows or the vein patterns in stone, the texture in a piece of fabric or the features of someone's face. Therein everything unfolds, where an answer can be given, where peace can be found, where time opens up to its vastness yet its proximity — being so intensely immersed in the stillness of that moment, that a discovery can be made.

Though originally from Brooklyn, New York, the Boston area has been Jose Spencer's adopted home for the past ten years. He is an abstract artist inspired by the great abstract expressionist of New York. Jose's attempt to share his artistic journey is made without the need for unnecessary words. From the smaller canvases to his larger scale works, Jose goes in the opposite direction of what one thinks, thereby opening up the painting to the intimacy, beauty and truth of his art. He explores space, color, and form on a scale that is measured in emotion. Much of his work is process-oriented, pushing back on most viewer's impulse to continually search for the bigger picture, causing an introspective reaction.
