About The Artwork

This painting is artist quality acrylic on canvas. Stretched by hand on a wooden frame and primed with gesso. The subject matter is inspired by an aspect of climate change, acid rain. The forest is dead or dying. The colours are a visual statement that reflect the cool, northern atmosphere of the northern forests of Scandinavia, but equally connote the coldness of decay. The light is apocalyptic, a warning. The warmer colours are the remnants of life in this place, soon to fade. The style is an 'homage' to Piet Mondrian and his cool atmospheric landscapes. I chose this subject, firstly, because of the strange beauty of decay and secondly, because of my sadness at this kind of loss. I hope that the viewer finds this work reflective, melancholy, but hopeful. The painting is not framed, but I would recommend to a buyer that it should be a simple edge frame in matt black. I can have this done prior to shipping if required.

I am a recently retired Art teacher and have been painting more seriously since 2005, although I originally trained as a potter. My original idea as a young foundation student was to train as a painter, but I got involved with clay and it took me in a different direction. I was Director of Specialism in a large school, which was nationally recognised for the arts. I have had numerous and successful exhibitions of my studio ceramics over many years. I have also had several exhibitions of my paintings at local art galleries in the NE and in Cumbria and I am currently working on a range of landscape paintings, which I am endeavouring to submit to on-line galleries and local galleries, such as the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle. I have worked with many well known artists over my career, such as Nahem Shoa and the internationally renowned Takeshi Yasuda. I hope to establish a higher profile and extend my painting vocabulary through sights such as Saatchi Art. I live in NE England and I am inspired by local and rural landscape and the disappearing industrial landscape of northern England. I also enjoy travel and have visited Italy many times, which is for me, a perfect place to be inspired.
